むかし、坂下の谷は入江で舟の出入りがあり、漁師がいて網を干していたのであろう。明治の末頃までは千川沿いの一帯は「氷川たんぼ」といわれた水田地帯であった。
その後、住宅や工場がふえ、大雨のたびに洪水となり、昭和９年に千川は暗渠となった。なお、千川は古くは「小石川」と言われたが、いつの頃からか千川と呼ばれるようになった。
