BASTION SAN MIGUEL
Named after and dedicated to St. Michael
Archangel, the Prince of the Heavenly Host and
Protector of God's faithful people, who
i miraculously appeared in Mount Gargano,
Italy, on May 8, 492, to help and protect the
people of the area against foreign invaders.
In the Book of Revelations of the Bible, St.
Michael is to lead the loyal angels of God
against the rebellious ones, in the final battle
between good and evil called Armageddon
When the explorer Miguel Lopez de Legaspi
ordered the construction of Fort San Pedro on
May 8, 1565, it was to protect the Spaniards
from the unrelenting guerrilla attacks inflicted
on them by the native Cebuanos. It was on the
same date that he renamed the conquered
Kingdom of Sugbo (Cebu), headed by King
Tupas, as Villa de San Miguel, to honor the
Archangel and invoke his help and protection.
